This was our first DXpedition to Sheigra in December, so we were not sure what to expect either from reception conditions or from the weather in this remote corner of north west Sutherland. As it turned out, the weather was very kind, with only three cold days when the temperature hovered around freezing with snow on the ground; the rest of the fortnight was mild (typically around 11 degrees Celsius both by day and night) and windy but with very little rain - quite unusual for this area! As for reception, this certainly exceeded our expectations. Despite the active conditions that might be expected at this point in the solar cycle, solar activity remained quiet and stable with only two unsettled days in the middle of our stay when generally poor reception was experienced on mediumwave - although this was compensated by some fine signals from Bolivia and Peru on the 60 metre tropical band. North American reception was a little disappointing at times, but in general conditions were interesting and varied, both on medium and shortwave, with Asian stations being particularly dominant both around midnight and in the early to mid afternoon. Once again one frequency provided some spectacular DX reception day after day: 1593 kHz mediumwave with signals from China, India, Thailand, Uzbekistan and even Japan...
Thanks to member Andy Ikin of Wellbrook Communications we had the opportunity this time to test a 14db pre-amp, which proved particularly useful for boosting weak daytime mediumwave signals and shortwave listening in general. We also tested a Wellbrook Communications ALA1530 broadband active loop aerial which, although no match for 500m beverages, was helpful at times.
