As usual we left Reading around 6pm on the Friday for the 670 mile journey north, reaching our now familiar overnight stop just north of Perth shortly after 0100. We like to stop rather than pressing on through the night as, apart from being able to rest, it means you get to see the full splendour of the Highlands in daylight.
After a rather uncomfortable night's doze in the front seat of the new Rover 25, we set off just before 7am, stopping for breakfast at the Little Chef in Tomatin soon after 0900 and finally reaching Sheigra at midday Saturday. Having followed on immediately from Clive (who left the cottage early Saturday morning), the canes were already in position and we managed to run all four aerial wires out, get the termination rods and a basic earthing setup in place just as dusk set in - soon after 4pm. Exhausted after the long drive plus the several treks up and down the very steep hills to get the beverages set up, we completed the cabling indoors and after a short session of listening retired for an early night.
Our visit to Sheigra this November coincided with almost exactly the same dates as last year, but once again there were plenty of surprises. After an initial few days of mainly Latin American signals on mediumwave, conditions began to change with North America taking over by the weekend and these good conditions continuing for much of the second week. On our last night (23-24 Nov) mediumwave wasn't up to much but this was more than made up by excellent tropical band (90 and 60m) reception from Peru and Bolivia. We were particularly lucky at this point in the solar cycle to get such good conditions for so much of the fortnight.
Weatherwise it was generally breezy and bright for most of the time, with daytime temperatures around 6-8 degrees. That is, apart from the 18th when we were hit by severe gales which lasted over 24 hours. When the wind eventually subsided we were amazed to find the aerials intact, apart from two broken leads on the termination earth rods - these are at the far end of the aerials up on the clifftops and they take the full brunt of Atlantic storms.
This year our shortwave loggings from Sheigra will be included in the regular HF and Tropical Band Logbooks. The mediumwave logs follow; possible UK firsts or other particularly noteworthy observations are highlighted.
